Mirwin has used a number of hosting providers in the past (from Dreamhost and GoDaddy to GNi and Host Virtual). We are currently running with Host Virtual and looking to expand back into an PDX datacenter and possibly in Texas. The added redundancy is for Mirwin’s new service offering: Web and data hosting for our customers. Starting at $6/month, we provide full-service administration and redundant website hosting. Our web design team has produced enough sites that the need for a hosting plan grew out naturally. More news to follow.

Setting up proper backup and redundancy for web hosts will be a source of many future posts. To get things situated, though, I’ll be installing GRSecurity, a hardening set of linux patches to minimize our security footprint. Next, an application firewall like mod_security, to proactively catch scans, XSS attacks and SQL injection attempts.

If all goes well, our Portland development machine might even house a semi-pro FPS gaming team.

I am a network security enthusiast at heart, so it was an unbelievable honor when Sourcefire, a leader in security software, selected me from hundreds of applicants to receive one of their two annual Snort Scholarships! My work for OSU’s Network Engineering Team to monitor and secure the campus network helped me to better understand network security in a very hands-on way and this recognition is just great.

Sourcefire develops the Snort “Intrusion Detection System” or IDS. An IDS listens for anomalies on the network. Since so much of people’s communication (websites, email, messaging) has very specific patterns, deviations from this can be a useful indicator of Bad Things (TM). Through understanding of the network and configuring the software to it, Snort is helping OSU (and soon the OSL!) to stay one step ahead.

So Alex Polvi had the amazing idea of going to Linux.conf.au. The four of us (Alex and Brandon, Justin and myself) are a perfect slice out of the Open Source pie at Oregon State and this conference would be an ideal place to network and expand our reach in the community. So, please send us to linux.conf.au. :)

The site is meant to let people know who we are, what we want to and why we deserve to do it. What better way to experience open source than to rely on the to help make it happen? And to top it off, we even made it to the frontpage of digg.com!
